FL SAAC

Y'all need to expand your horizons.  I would move to the Principality of Sealand. A beautiful an sovereign nation located in the calm and peaceful North Sea. Low taxes and a zero crime rate make this an ideal place  to retire.

Sealand.  Lol.  Are there any direct flights there?

How about the fuel cost factor? California is not good in that regard, especially for those of us with thirsty motors.

This is good site to compare different areas cost of living (less taxes) to make an educated decision. You can customize your choices to check one against the other.

wouldn't the taxes be a major factor?Such as [real estate] Property tax (extremely high here in NJ), personal property tax, income tax on retirement income, income tax, sales tax, fuel tax??

Politifact is garbage.  The property taxes are limited by Proposition 13 to 1% assessed value. That includes school taxes. Much of the populous that is exiting is skilled labor which is being replaced by illegal aliens. Business has been exiting in droves since the late 80's because of the unfriendly climate.  What I stated is fact compiled by US government statistics, not biased garbage.
As for West Hollywood. We won't discuss it's majority of inhabitants.

I'm all about learning something new so please feel free to message me those government statistics that you are using as your base so I can be better informed on how California is turning into a bunch of illegals and businesses are leaving by the droves. I guess my son is the exception to the rule(Masters in finance and has passed the 3 CFA exams) when he moved there a few years ago to find a job because he couldn't in Mi.

It appears that most here on the SAAC forum are all about MONEY first and Family second? As retirement looms for me i'll be where my kids are  or the majority of them. For me that is Michigan with my taxes on my pension thanks to our politicians.

So, one kid is in New York, one kid is in Idaho, and one kid is in Florida, which if you follow your kids, I should divorce, my x can more to one, I can move to another, and our cat can go to the third? My one brother bought a condo in SC and they are thinking their kids might visit them. Interesting way to pick a place to live. They do not plan on, that's the funny part....Snowbirds? I don't get that, why keep a house and pay taxes on it and worry about it when your not there?

Anyway, great conversation and arguments!

I want to touch on the politics issue that SAAC seems to have, how about a place on this forum labeled "politics" when if you get scared on such a subject, you can choose not to go?

Some of the things that I will be looking at is if the location I'm interested in has real estate taxes, school taxes, personal property taxes AND does it have a full time Police Department or is it a County Sheriff patrol? Does it have a volunteer Fire Department or full time? Does it have local schools or just one county High School?

Is it well water or public water supply? Are their public sewers or just septic tanks?

Items like this will tell you what the nature of the area is like.

Where I am at now gives a discount to real estate taxes for Seniors. Gasolene is about the same. Gas & Electric is high. Other utilities keep creeping up. Food prices are higher in rural areas for lack of competition of the big food chains.

Also, I want real pavement, not dirt roads.

Everyone has different considerations and if you move a fairly remote area make sure you aren't in fire prone areas with a volunteer fire department. They might take a vote on whether to save your house and they might turn it down because you only bought one keg of beer at the picnic last year?

I don't like getting my brake scoops full of cow manure driving "the country roads" either. Call me picky.

Hey, I've said it before and I'll say it again: North Carolina may not be "God's Country" but it's where he goes on vacation! ;)

you missed my point as many never mention areas -say where there kids may live- and want to know areas in a general vicinity. They are asking for any areas around the country it appears hence my comment. Hey NOBODY likes paying high taxes and I hate my Mi taxes as mentioned before.  Hey, some don't have kids. Others don't speak to their kids. Lots of different scenarios but that wasn't the vibe I was getting. A friend of mine is getting ready to retire and he is focused on  areas in NC near where his Daughter lives now.  My parents have been snowbirds  since 1996(Mom still is just left for Florida Sat- Dad passed away in 2018). All 4 of us kids visit them in Florida with the Grand kids for the last 25 years(great grand kids now too). 3 Months away with your kids visiting many can take(Mom goes 4 months now). I get why some are snowbirds. My parents rented instead of buying because of all the condo BS. My Mom now pays 12.5K for a little over 4 months 2 bedroom corner unit ocean front in Jensen Beach. Better than paying taxes, insurance and special assessments plus upkeep to the Condo(salt air messes with a LOT of stuff).Worrying about your house while you are away? Well many of my friends and coworkers own more than one house and usually it is "up North" as we call it here in lower Mi. They do not seem to worry about their 2nd homes while down in lower Mi or Ohio or Illinois.  Politics? I wish those that can't help themselves use a little more restraint or the Moderator should create a politics section. I can very well hold my own on calling out fake political BS as I ALWAYS bring facts to the table. :)  Gary
